On construction sites, butt fusion machines often face extreme environments — mud, rain, freezing cold, or scorching heat. These conditions can easily affect welding quality and shorten the equipment’s lifespan. Proper protection and maintenance are therefore essential to ensure reliable operation and consistent fusion performance.
1. Muddy or Wet Conditions
Moisture and mud are the biggest enemies of hydraulic systems and electrical components.
· Use a covered area or tent when welding in rainy weather to keep the control box and connectors dry.
· Make sure the hydraulic power unit (HPU) is positioned on a stable, elevated platform to prevent water ingress.
· Regularly clean the carriage rails and the clamp inserts to remove dirt that could affect pipe alignment.
Both the FX and WP Series butt fusion machines are equipped with enclosed or semi-enclosed hydraulic units and sealed connectors, providing effective protection against water splash and dust or dirt in harsh field conditions.
Low temperatures increase oil viscosity and slow down hydraulic response, while high temperatures make oil thinner and reduce pressure stability.
· Before operation, warm up the machine for several minutes to stabilize the oil flow.
· Ensure the heating plate temperature reaches the standard 220–230°C range before fusion.
· Select hydraulic oil grade according to ambient temperature — lower viscosity for cold climates, higher viscosity for hot regions.
In summer or tropical regions, excessive ambient heat can cause overheating and oil degradation.
· Keep the hydraulic station shaded and well-ventilated.
· Avoid direct sunlight on the control panel and heating plate.
· Pause periodically during continuous operation to prevent component fatigue.
· After each workday, wipe down the machine surface and place the heating plate into its designated holder basket for cooling and storage.
· Regularly check pressure stability using the gauge on the control box.
· Replace sealing rings and hydraulic oil every 6–12 months depending on usage frequency.
Conclusion
Harsh weather is inevitable, but poor preparation isn’t. With proper care and protection, your butt fusion machines — whether from the WP Series or the FX Series— will continue delivering strong, reliable joints under any condition.
